A Thought on Theme Weddings
Thinking about a theme wedding? Or are you afraid your wedding will turn into a
circus? Theme weddings can be fun, unique and personalized. Picking a theme
doesn't mean you have to choose an outrageous one. Be true to yourself. Themes
can be simple, elaborate, trendy or unusual. A theme should match the couple and
reflect their individual personalities. Think about it, one of your first thoughts, as
a bride about your wedding is what color to use. “Purple has been my favorite
color since I was five so my wedding colors will be Purple and Silver”. You plan on
using this color in everything you do correct? Purple and Silver would be used in
the Flowers, Cake, and Bridesmaid attire? Guess what, you’v just selected a
theme. Yes, your theme can be as simple as a color scheme. But why not
elaborate on it. Themes can be as simple as using an inanimate object or as grand
as using a decade as your inspiration. Most themes can be classified in one of the
seven following categories:
Seasonal - one of the most popular. Who hasn’t thought of that June
wedding when the weather is warm and the sun is shining full of bright vibrant
colors? Or maybe you prefer winter’s cool breezes, the warmth of a fireplace and
a light snowfall. Seasonal themes incorporate everything you love about that
particular time of year. And don’t forget holidays! They’re seasonal too. Easter
falls in a spring month and Christmas brings a grand celebration of the winter
season.
Fantasy – Like playing dress up? A fantasy themed wedding may just be
up your alley. Remember when you were five and you loved Cinderella? Or
admired the glamorous Hollywood stars of yesteryear? A fantasy wedding can
bring your fantasies to reality. You’re Prince Charming, Knight in shining armor
or your Cowboy. With fantasy weddings you can go all out or just incorporate a
few key items. What about glass slippers as a centerpiece, a red carpet grand
entrance, or line dancing and cowboy hats. Keys to a fantasy wedding: research
your ideas, and be consistent with your theme. Cinderella needs to have her ball
gown.
Places/Destinations – Maybe you would love to have a wedding in
Hawaii. Why not bring a taste of Hawaii to your guests complete with leis and the
hula. Wedding themes using destinations can be delightful and fun. Getting
married in a well know city like New York? Give guests favors such as mini
Statue of Liberties or a big candied apple (for the Big Apple of course). How about
international destinations like Paris, France. An Eiffel Tower shaped wedding
cake would be a show stopper! Keys to a destination themed wedding: Research
your desired location. Find out about local cultures and history. Perhaps even find
out about how weddings are performed in that area. Bring in food is selections
that would give guests a taste of your chosen area.
Nature – Simply put this theme category covers anything found in
nature. Enhance your wedding with an article found in nature. Magnolia’s your
favorite flower; integrate magnolias into everything you do for your wedding
decor. Think out of the box. What about butterflies or doves? Or maybe you
prefer a natural setting like a Tropical Rain forest or the Beach. These themes can
simply be translated into beautiful affairs. Keys to a nature themed wedding:
make an effort to showcase your chosen theme. Seashells and sand for a Beach
theme, lots of lush tropical greens and flowers for a Rain forest theme or
terracotta flowerpots for a Garden theme.
Place in Time/Decade – Do you love the romance of the Victorian age
or do you prefer the jazzy beats of the Big Band Era? This theme category adds all
the fun and romance of a certain period of time. You can chose to anything from
Medieval to Disco or a classic look of the 40’s. This is another category that you
can go all out or add lots of stylish details of the era. You can dress in period attire
or just add accents of that place in time. Key points to a Place in Time/Decade
wedding: researching the era or decade is essential. Find out what was worn;
music played and even trends during that decade. Look for locations that will
intensify your theme.
Cultural – another popular theme. Who doesn't’t want to add a bit of
their own heritage to their big day? Cultural weddings reflect the cultural heritage
of bride & groom. It can also be translated as religious backgrounds. What about
an African inspired wedding? Or an Asian flair? Key points to a cultural wedding:
research you’re culture or heritage. How are weddings performed? Are there any
special ceremonies you can incorporate? What type of food is typically served at
weddings?
Objects/Colors – yes this may seem odd but you can use just a single
object for your wedding theme. Ever heard of a Candlelight wedding? Any object
you can think of can be used as inspiration for your wedding theme. Circles, Polka
Dots, Pearls, Crystals, and even colors can make and outstanding impact on your
wedding decor. Key points: pick an object and run with it. Repeating your pattern
will add drama to your decor and relay your chosen theme.
Now that you have an idea on themes get creative. Maybe you are thinking, “I
like the thought of a Victorian theme but I would love to get married in a Garden
atmosphere”. Mix your themes. Ever heard of a Victorian Garden wedding?
Many of the themes mentioned can be mixed and matched to create one
spectacular event. Don’t be afraid of being different, pick a theme (or two) and go
with it!
